I'm putting this update at the top of this post as well as at the bottom, so nobody misses it:
A important critique of a Google feature -- which inevitably illustrates how little tolerance for criticism of G+ there is, and how then bloggers feel pressured to explain themselves, update, give Google the benefit of the doubt again, etc. etc. The reality is, Google does thing to maximize its giant information scrape to sell ads, and minimize your privacy. Full stop. And it needs a constant push back to try to get it to behave better.
