This is Part 1 of a series.
Lizzy Swordthain, apparently a woman from Germany who speaks good English, owns a number of galleries and cafes in Durdane in the Corsica South Coast community. I don't really recall her from earlier years there but likely she was there. I have visited the galleries in the past and purchased works there. Just this week, I went to Scylla Rhiadra's show at Lizzy's goofily named HeArt and Soul Gallery and purchased two items -- one before this debacle, one after. I'll be happy to go on purchasing Scylla's works -- arranged SL photos with arty touches and messages -- only not at this venue.
That's because Lizzy and her boyfriend MajorTom (yeesh -this from 1983 or this from 1969 or even this from 2011) are self-entitled yuppies (something tells me they are too old to be Millenials) and they need to experience what it is like to NOT have a good neighbour -- when they did have one before.
Summary: I abandoned a parcel of about 2560 in the Corsica continent region of Durdane when a long-time tenant left because I am looking for every chance to tier down now, as Mainland business has declined, particularly with competition with the Lindens' own Bellisseria -- now with 2048 m2 size lots and houses whose prims don't count -- and homesteads -- now not required to be attached first to an island purchase to own. I would still like to keep my business going, but I want less of it and have been steadily decreasing each month. I have land across 56 sims but it's only 12-13 sims' worth of land and I've also publicized this. I don't generally have lots bigger than 4096 -- rarely I will. Most of the lots are either 1024 or 2048 or in organized town houses or skybox landings. I just did a group census and I have approximately 1300 customers, more than last year, despite less land, it's odd -- except that's because I made more cheaper rentals available, and because some of those people are alts and roomies of existing paying tenants. I would say more than half of my tenants are NOT Americans and are from poorer countries and many of them pay my rentals not even by the week, as they are programmed, but trickling in their Linden earnings by the day. They may come from countries that make it very hard to get a credit card let alone something like PayPal or Skrillex.
I'm a poor person in RL and not a "land baron" in SL and never have been, even if I had a few more sims for rent. With the group land tier bonus of 10%, I essentially got another sim, which is often used to make parks and the SL Public Land Preserve. I also have approximately 56 land tier donors which make up yet another sim or so. So it's a lot of picky work for nothing, enabling me to pay a few RL bills and buy SL content. Less often now my RL son can help me and will come in occasionally and do some chores. We also have one other occasional helper.
This background -- which has been stated many times here or on the forums -- is necessarily to explain that I'm all about small business -- micro business might be what you call it in SL where you earn 17 cents from somebody's rental or the sale of an artwork. I'm all about small accounts on Twitter, where I've been since 2007. So this notion that I'm some overbearing land baron is just prejudice, ignorance, and stupidity -- because even operations that are three times or ten times larger than mine are still essentially small businesses, often running at a loss or just barely making it in this environment and with RL difficulties like COVID and inflation. About two years ago now I believe it was, the Lindens demanded that we begin paying state tax, which for me was like adding the cost of a brand new island every month -- but with no island to rent out. The Lindens banned gatchas in the form they used to appear, which really gutted that secondary economy which wasn't just about creators but about people buying and selling their gatchas in order to support themselves in SL -- by paying for rentals, among other things.
I hope to write more about the art world as it has been very interesting with a lot of high quality work in it.
Corsica South Coast, as it is now called (its earlier iteration, Campbell Coast, under other management, went under -- after a land baron named Winning Witte (now banned) with a newish alt (pansophical) with larger holdings than me destroyed it out of idiocy and greed) still persists and had a big revival of sorts but has now endured some losses. On the night of January 19, Soull Starlight, a Black entrepreneur and "experience provider" as the phrase goes these days (I think invented by the Lindens), abruptly disappeared, with all her land holdings everywhere on many sims. In CSC, she had run Eatonville, which was the re-creation of a Black town that was in part referencing the popular novel The Secret Life of Bees. She occasionally had music and art there as well and it had a fair number of visitors -- although really not enough given that it represented one of the few persistent Black museums in SL. I credit Soul, with whom I had a number of philosophical differences about rentals and events in SL, with getting me to read The Secret Life of Bees (which I had to conclude was more about dysfunctional white people than Black people, but ok, still with very powerful characters, which has now been made into a movie). I hope she's ok.
Back when Campbell Coast collapsed, and all the easements and the road were either abandoned (making it a chore for Lindens to link up or conversely, a chore for remaining owners to request in smaller amounts) or put at very low prices (enabling them to fall prey to ad farm vultures), I got a stretch of abandoned/dirt-cheap road to maintain and put in rentals WAY BELOW THE COST OF TIER because flat, internal nothing sims with no waterfront and no Linden road just won't rent otherwise. To be sure, a number of overstuffed, landscaped, lavishly furnished rentals also seem to have some success here at much higher prices, but that's likely rentals to friends or active members of CSC.
"Flat nothing" is hard to fill, and I see some recent owners just give up. A resident road can somewhat compensate for it (psychologically people often want something other than a flat nothing field) but not entirely. The rentals only PARTLY cover the tier there. At one point I slightly raised the price to cover the TIER MORE but it was STILL NOT COVERED. It was that or abandon it -- and I did some of that.
So when a long-term tenant left, I abandoned the 2560 or whatever it was in Durdane -- a neighbour rentals agent immediately grabbed it. She then went on to grab a lot (all?) of Soull's land as well in record time with no auction, even before the 7 days were up (which suggests the account had been defaulted on some time before that, possibly with no contact with the Lindens). We discussed this sad departure of Soull several times -- no one knew anything and still doesn't. This neighbour then offered to give us the 512 m2 that would link the two roads -- she didn't seem interested in tiering the roads. We had already requested part of it out of the larger abandoned lot from the Lindens, so we were happy to buy it for $1/m from that neighbour. I then rebuilt the road to try to flatten it, and prevent sinking into it by laying prim blocks which is the only thing that works reliably -- and hadn't finished it yet when I had the following conversation.
BEFORE this (I can't find the chat now but I will), I had GIVEN AWAY FOR FREE a 1024 to Lizzy Swordthain when she put in her builds all around thus making it essentially unlikely my land would rent (next to a gallery with visitors where there would be less privacy) and where a store owner would not likely locate (not roadside or near anything with traffic). I didn't mind doing this because as I noted, I tiered down. I didn't get any tips later for this or much of a thank you -- when I gave Lizzy that land, I had the distinct impression that she was so intent on building her empire that she just assumed others would recognize her greatness and step aside LOL. I sort of filed that in the back of my mind. If I had ever been in her group (not sure I left it now), I believe I blocked it or left it because she spams her events so heavily.
Next, as I'm building the road (still not completely finished and now I may not bother), I had this conversation -- which again suggests a certain overbearing sense of eminent domain -- "We need to work together as a community so my business can thrive while your little shabby business needs to step aside" -- that's the vibe I certainly got then and was only to confirm it.
Next, she asked me to put stairways in for her. So it wasn't enough that I gave her 1024 of land for free; it wasn't enough that I agreed to CHANGE MY BUILD by the Linden road which was already finished, remove the road and signs and take a somewhat arduously set-up little Japanese house and teleporters to sky boxes and turn them completely around and rearrange everything. Now she wanted stairways as the levels of the land were different -- in order to prevent really bad sinking in the road I made across the sim, I had to lower its level because as always happens with Linden land, it was not perfectly flat across the sim. It looks flat and thus becomes worthless to realtors and end users (that's why so much of it is abandoned) but it isn't actually flat enough to enable good builds.
I didn't get around to putting the stairways in -- she offered to put them in, and then DID simply lay them down without my consent -- with that bustling, self-entitled "entrepreneurial" "lean in" "business girl boss" type of person that people try to wield on SL that merely seems pathetic because if they really had all of that, they'd be doing it in RL.
They'd be doing it in RL.
As someone who has had more real life than they know what to do with, working multiple interesting jobs, helping people, traveling around the world, doing all kinds of things, raising a family -- I shrug when I meet people like this. I don't have to justify anything to them, as I have worked in real small businesses in RL and have raised money in RL and run communities in RL and if I want a little online hobby now, that's my call. I could never feed my family on what you can earn in SL and always worked multiple jobs as a single parent.
Second Life is about three types of games: 1) play war; 2) play house; 3) play store. If someone wants to play store, along with their chosen partner to play house, I generally have no need to start "play war" with them unless they get into my space and get up in my grill.
Then this conversation ensues, from which you can see:
o Lizzie admits there are no cars turning into this resident-made (by me) road -- I rarely see them, and then only of the people who live there. There is objectively no need for this road, I could add once again, and I could abandon it, the Lindens won't be able to auction or give it away, and there it will sit until someone enroaches a road over it, which might stick. Still, I think for now, it's still "a nice thing to do".
o I tell her how hard it will be to change my build around BUT DO SO ANYWAY. BTW in an earlier convo, I had explained that I got this road cap abandoned, and that there was still an abandoned parcel next to it -- I decided not to get the whole thing -- and she could get it. And she grabbed it. Why did I bother to add to my tier??? To make this dead loss less of one by having it connect to the Linden Circuit de Course which runs through Corsica -- there are occasional drivers that come in.
o No, she did NOT repeat NOT thank me for in fact turning my build all around and rearranging it to her satisfaction for a through-way from her other land parcel (?!). The "thank you" scene in chat was merely for considering it -- when I DID IT I got nothing. Instead I got a) a friendship request so she could get more out of me and see me online to nag b) spam about her events.
Sigh.
o I even then wrote to her to say, hey, I turned the build around and re-did it as you suggested -- and got NOTHING. I thought that was odd, but So Very SL. I don't expect tips from things like this, but other people in CSC do regularly leave tips because I maintain the road. I provide free gifts for the tips and regularly change the gift and the refreshments near them with the seasons.

Note here that at this point she has:
o received a free 1024 from me between her two parcels
o had me maintain a road to reach her various properties from across two sides of the Linden road
o had me turn around and change my rentals landing building to suit her demand for a thru-way
o not said thank you despite being reminded of this, much less provided a modest tip (never expected in SL where people are generally pretty stingy with few exceptions)
o AND *placed ugly sculpty stairs on my land because she now feels entitled to decorate my land MERELY because it is open to the public and I've caved several times to her overbearing requests. BTW, this is why you never do this in SL. I do it -- for tenants, for neighbours, for friends -- because it is "nice to be nice" as a friend of mine often says, and because it's good to "go along to get along" in SL where people are vicious takers.
But I do reach my limit. I return the ugly stairs. I have nicer sculpty ones, even, let alone mesh as well. But I personally don't see the need for MORE PRIMS ON MY LAND that has yet to rent even one unit despite weeks of advertising, a Classifieds ads and a newsletter. Why? Because it's an odd experiment. People don't feel safe in a rental that is above a road to public venues even if up in the sky with security. There is nothing so attractive about this area and its activities -- most people don't go to art galleries, listen to German DJs (most of their events) or fish. I go to the first two events happily, but I'm not the norm. Most people want clubs of various types, shopping, pets of either the human or AI type, etc. That's fine, I have 38 KittyCats in Prokofy's Census.
So I don't get to this chore right away because a) we had a death in the family b) I had a job to finish c) hospital visits d) stuff and nonsense in SL and RL that came before this silly request to put stairs in so people could WALK in a NO FLY ZONE between SOMEONE ELSE'S PROPERTIES. Lizzy (Lulz? Luzzy? Whatever her name is) keeps fly OFF on her galleries as many art enthusiastis do because they think otherwise people will swoop in and look at their wares only cursorily. Or perhaps they fear griefing. Or maybe they want it to be "like real life" (ridiculous, as we are avian creatures and NOT in real life). Who the hell knows. It's a really, really stupid thing and if anything PREVENTS sales because it creates discomfort and forces departures.
So after buying Scylla's picture, to get over to my land to see possibly about those stairs, I had to WALK slowly like a sleepy fly in molasses across half a sim, struggling down ridiculous stairs and staggering along a winding, landscaped path to the Linden road finally, then to my land...
...Whereupon I see that Lizzy -- despite having the stairs return pointedly, but without comment -- has now laid out that typically banal and actually-not-that-beautiful Skye landscaping (which I myself was forced to use here to match my neighbours, who were originally landscaped by someone named kitten who has long since left after a bad break-up here).
So now, after a whole chain of self-entitlements from Lizzy coming over a number of months, I decide it's time to really push back HARD, remove the prim, but not be polite and easy-going any more as I have been for months on end with this character:

So this short, hard, swift repartee is really all there is to it -- and in some cases, some one might say "Oh, sorry : (" and actually feel a little guilty at all they have taken and all they have gotten without a thanks or a tip. SOME CASES. But not in SL, where the default when one neighbour criticizes another is to ratchet it up, escalate it, and make it worse. And that's fine.
Because I'm here to do the exactly the same, as long as it takes. We do not have the rule of law. We do not have a Small Claims Court. We do not have lawyers with effect. We live on the brutal prairie in the Wild West STILL because we live in an authoritarian society where the oppressive care-takers don't even look at their land, let alone manage it, as they are busy with their Empire elsewhere.
I can wait four years. I can wait 20 years. I've waited 20 years for this idiot next to me in Wakeley to get gone -- with his giant, usually half-empty apartment tower with ugly modern metallic fixings with not only ban lines but aggressive returns of even the slightest encroaching tree on my land -- put up to somehow mitigate the sight of his ugly tower next to my bucolic Tibetan community. He's gone -- at least. There was an empty field, and now a rather ugly boating build but it's for sale -- at a too-high price but maybe someone values sailing seven seas...that are essentially landlocked because of Linden dams further away. Oh well...
So Lizzy does not disappoint -- proving that WITH PEOPLE LIKE THIS, ONLY FORCE CAN BE USED BECAUSE ONLY FORCE IS UNDERSTOOD.
She did not say "thank you" in local. She couldn't possibly have. I turned around the build LATER, and then wrote to her to inform her of this WHEN SHE WAS OFFLINE, as can be seen above. There's no local. Even if by some miracle there was (she suddenly came back online???) -- I'll go and check -- when I wrote to her directly describing how I had COMPLETED the job, THAT was when she could have simply written a "thank you" back -- and PS a tip would be nice. That's what I would do if some neighbour turned everything around for me and re-did their build, you know?
And tiered in addition to my rental landings lot, 1536 of road which costs me US $4.60 per month in tier and tax.
What's also ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS about this is while I returned the steps and made it clear I didn't want the steps -- and PS that should have been a clear hint I DID NOT WANT HER BUILDING ON MY GODDAMN LAND THANK YOU VERY MUCH, she STILL PERSISTED with a landscape pathway. She just assumed it was her right, it was "obvious" that this was "better" and "she should get to do this". Um, no. It's not better. And no you don't. If you send a gyazo and no one answers, why do you keep it there??? Huh???
This is just so patently hilarious and obvious -- stairs are returned, and you think if the path wasn't noticed then or instantly later -- it's ok to keep it? Huh???

I think I have to comment on your behavior. After all, as a co-owner of the land, it affects me too. I find your behavior extremely questionable. You behave as if you own everything on Durdane. You are not in a position to make demands about behavior on OUR lands.
This is Mainland, meaning we bought everything (except for one parcel of land you kindly gave us for free) from Lindenlab and pay our dues for it. So the land "belongs" to us, even if we have transferred it to the group, which is entirely OUR decision. So we also have the exclusive right to decide how to move around on our land.
Just because you own more land in SL than we do doesn't mean you have to look down on us as if we were lowly commoners. That's not polite, nor is it professional. As Lizzy said, everything we have built to design has been on our lands with the ROOT prim. So they will not count towards your prim count. IF we let something protrude into your (not flat) road, it was to at least make it look good for you. Not to mention the fact that it's not flat on the base land and is also phantom.
If you don't like the fact that we bought up most of the plots on Durdane to offer the community new incentives, then you're free to get upset about it. But don't take it out on us just because you've lost your chances of getting cheap land and your profits are diminished. At least we don't want to get rich on exorbitant prices for land and only want to present art, music and culture. And just as an aside: at least we're generating more traffic and making Durdane more attractive. Which has already been rewarded accordingly. The fact that we sell "mediocre art" is also not correct. Because the artists sell it themselves and we only give them the free space to present themselves. Moreover, art is always art in the eye of the beholder. It may seem mediocre to you, but others like it. You can't draw conclusions about others from yourself. That is presumptuous and arrogant. You also don't seem to have informed yourself sufficiently about what we do. Blind actionism and pigeonholing is something I don't like at all.
You may have been in SL for 20 years, but that doesn't give you the right to judge others or accuse them of having an "inflated sense of self-worth". Just because WE look with pride at what WE have created does not make us puffed up or conceited. That is an insult that I do not tolerate as such. We get a lot of encouragement from the artists and the community. I've been in SL for 17 years and have never been treated so condescendingly by someone who doesn't even know me. Your behavior is unprofessional and does not demonstrate an adult approach to conflict resolution. Sure, you can ban us on your "STREET". But don't you think that's a bit ridiculous? I'm sure that Lizzy thanked you, even without me being aware of your "conversation" ... I know her well and she's a polite person who behaves really well, which is more than I can say for you. Above all, it's silly to harp on about such a "little thing" now. It looks to me like you're just looking for reasons to "block / ban" us or drive us away from Durdane. But we're not going to do you that favor. We will stay. We've invested too much money, time and effort in the projects for that.
Finally, I would like to ask you to think a little about the way you talk to and treat people. Many things can be solved much better in a personal conversation and with a certain degree of politeness and respect than by simply acting blindly.

Deny away, Big Guy! I would expect nothing less. I stand by my characterization of much of this art as "mediocre" even thought I myself buy it and have the same kind of middle-brow to low-brow tastes as the people who make it. I am aware, however that this is, well Second Life. Not First Life. Not, oh, "Paris, France, Europe" as we Americans call that place with the Louvre, which reminds with "Hoover".
I'm one of those people who never puts all my titles in emails or notecards to people -- I only put them on my occasional newsletters to my tenants and groups so that people can see all my projects and ask about them or go to them.
I totally get that some people need to emulate real life in Second Life. I never laugh at this. I emulate it myself. To me, real life and Second Life are all on a continuum. I have very dear friends in SL who, while virtual in manifestation, seem real enough to me (most of them) and also very dear friends in RL who are completely bewildered about SL or even mock it (and who sometimes feel unreal). I have no idea what MajorTom's real life is all about but I'm willing to bet real money that he has never come near any armed forces of any country and has never served anywhere, but just likes David Bowie or more likely Peter Schilling, as do I, letting us know he's of a certain age.

Nothing works on people like this, even the sternest tone and starkest message -- I think even if "MajorTom" were to clear his cache and read Lulzy's chat with a clear, impartial mind, he might not understand how incrementally outrageous she was in her demands to me, which do NOT fall within the "good neighbour" category and do NOT fall in the "community" category because guess what -- we are not in a community. We have not attended group meetings and decided things democratically. I just came in, supported a road, put some very cheap rentals around it to offset but not cover the tier, and very rarely drop into the events. I tried to match my landscaping merely for the area to "look good" although the horrendously ordinary and ubiquitous Skye landscaping everywhere actually adds to the mediocre look of these sims. A judicious blend of other landscapers would help but I think those who took over CSC didn't want to spend all their time redoing all the landscaping but were trying to do other things to get income and activity.

There aren't "a few triangles". Lizzy -- the landscaping objects are in HER name, not MajorTom's regardless of his ownership of the group land (with his girlfriend and alts) -- extended way into the road, all along the road.
I returned them. No more Mr. Nice Guy. Hilariously, when I came back this morning, she had put them BACK, this time more cleverly tucking them UNDER my road object so they wouldn't just out as much -- but of course still encroaching on my land!
So very Lulzy, you know? One of the most hilarious self-entitlement capers I've ever seen in my entire SL -- I return encroaching prims, I have this very outraged back and forth with this little lady, and she then *puts her landscaping BACK, TUCKING IT UNDER MY ROAD, so it's now less scrappy looking, but still encroaching.
Laff riot.
Ordinarily, I let stuff like this go. I have stuff like this on other sims such as Atis where I have let it go for years and years, with no answer from the owners (God knows how their tier is paid) but if I returned it, their entire landscaping hill would go with it, because it's linked, leaving their property -- and our whole area -- to look like ass -- so I leave it, and tell tenants to work around it. They don't always, and leave. At some point I will have to return it because of the losses I have suffered but no need to hurry.
I don't see any need to ban the entire public by letting my tenants put in ban lines, if they ever show up -- I never do that, and it's against my rules.
What I will do is turn off fly everywhere (something my tenants do occasionally, which I discourge). Let the visitors have the same lovely experience Lulzy has created for them at her ultra-mod galleries on the road to her OTHER galleries.
So I'm happy to leave this all exactly as it is now, with the exception of adding a pavement -- not some silly girly pathway -- around my landing house to match the build. My tenants can put in any bans they like, or turn fly on or off, if I ever get any.
At any time this land can be sold for $13/meter -- high for what is only a road cap and a road, but given that this is perceived as "so valuable" because it's near managed rental communities and Corsica South Coast, it can be paid to secure proximity between businesses, even if they are "for fun". That's my price. It's not the zillions of Lindens asked for -- and occasionally got -- by pan, who at one time monopolized ALL the road caps leading from the Linden road to resident roads for at least 4-5 sims in this area. Never heard anyone but me complain about THAT.
Now was this worth 8,390 words of text, to be sure, most of it pasted chat? Which, BTW, is perfectly legal to do outside of Linden Lab's servers, and in my state, which is a one-party state concerning rights of correspondence, the end, don't even start with any Rechtsstaat notions you want to bring to the table here.
