With this video about Meta, which I got word of from William May, my old friend from Second Life, you can see that the world envisioned by Vernor Vinges in Rainbow's End is coming closer.
In Vinges' science fiction novel, people have "wearables" that enable them to seamlessly see all sorts of aspects of virtuality in reality -- a boy walking to school can play a game of war with monsters and weapons that "aren't there" but he can see. People can have meetings with the holograms or 3-D avatars of their counterparts effortlessly. The world is made to look better everywhere, and nobody looks at the real world again after that.
And it turns out Vinges is speaking on these topics lately -- see below in the related posts.
I'm wondering how these developments compare to Hi-Fi, which is the new virtual reality system that Philip Rosedale and friends are working on.
Also, while I think some people will think it's great to be viewing a world where flames shoot out of their fingers, I think there is still the issue of vertigo.
